FAQ

At what age should my child start piano lessons?

It depends on the child and the availability of the parent's involvement. I accept students of at least 5 years of age. I also accept older beginners and adult students!

What kind of piano should I get?

An acoustic piano is ideal for the long-term. Electric pianos and digital keyboards do not have the same effect when playing with dynamics and pedal, and will feel and sound different than playing on an acoustic piano. If budget and space do not allow for a piano, electric pianos and keyboards are an alternative.

Brands for pianos and keyboards include Yamaha, Kawai, Young Chang, Casio, Roland, and more.

Remember to check Kijiji or Facebook Market Place for used pianos!

Remember to also get your acoustic piano tuned!

How much are lessons?

Lessons are 30 minutes/week with a fee of $30/lesson at $60/hr. Lessons require more time as the student advances (45 min to 1 hour).

Fees are calculated annually, and can be paid by a flat monthly fee or by the term.

How long should my child be practicing?

There is no limit on how long you should practice. The more you practice, the more you will progress, but it is important that you are practicing in the right environment of focus and attention without distraction to make the practice session easier and effective. Daily practice is recommended and the more advanced the student is, the longer practice is required.

This is a general guideline you can follow:

Beginners: 15 - 20 min / day

Levels 1 - 4: 20 - 40 min / day

Levels 5 - 6: 45 - 60 min / day

Levels 7 - 8: 60 - 80 min / day

Levels 9 - Diploma: at least 90 - 120 min / day

You can split this time into several sessions. Remember to take breaks!
